Catalytic converters are an important part of a vehicle’s exhaust system. They are designed to reduce the amount of harmful pollutants that are released into the atmosphere. The catalytic converter works by converting harmful pollutants such as carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides into harmless gases such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and water. This is accomplished through a chemical reaction that occurs when the exhaust gases pass through a honeycomb-shaped substrate coated with a precious metal catalyst such as platinum, palladium, or rhodium. The chemical reaction causes the pollutant molecules to break apart and form the harmless gases.
